Get your kicks, on Route 66

Last month we had the opportunity to travel to Kingman, Arizona for my brother's wedding. We got to see our son Michael and meet his girlfriend Charlie, who drove up from Tucson, and see a niece and her family, who we haven't seen in 11 years. We had a ton of fun, dancing the night away and celebrating love and life.

Kingman is pretty much in the middle of nowhere. I think whoever came up with that phrase, was in Kingman at the time. We flew into Las Vegas and then made about a 2 hour drive to get there, which took us along the infamous highway Route 66. Chuck Berry made a song about it, for those of you not old enough to remember:

Well it winds from Chicago to LA

More than 2,000 miles all the way

Get your kicks on Route 66

Well it goes through St Louis, Joplin Missouri

Oklahoma City looks oh so pretty

You'll see Amarillo, Gallup New Mexico

Flagstaff Arizona, don't forget Winona

Kingman, Barstaw, San Bernadino

Would you get hip to this kindly tip

And go take that California trip

Get your kicks on Route 66

Seriously. Kingman is in a song!  Hard to believe.

As we were making our way along Route 66, I realized we had no cell phone signal. The smart phone is so ingrained in our lives that we take it for granted that it will always be there to give us any kind of help and advice we might need. But there we were, driving through the middle of nowhere, with no cell phone signal. And then I saw something that made me a little uncomfortable...a sign telling us that there was an emergency phone 12 miles away.

TWELVE MILES? It's 100 degrees, in the middle of nowhere. If my car breaks down I either have to hitchhike, or walk 12 miles to make a call for help because I have no cell phone signal? No bueno.

So, before you head out on your summer travels, make sure your car is ready for it.  Road trips are fun, walking in the desert, not so much.
