Put Gas in and Go

Put Gas in and Go

As each of our kids has grown old enough to get a drivers license and a car, this is something we have said to them repeatedly - "having a car is more than put gas in and go." Cars are intricate machines made out of parts that wear down and wear out. If they are taken care of, however, they can last for hundreds of thousands of miles. A car is usually the second most expensive investment we make, next only to our home, so we should make sure we are protecting that investment by performing the manufacturers scheduled maintenance.  Maintenance can be anything from oil changes to timing belt replacement, and if it's a maintenance item on the spendy side people have the tendency to postpone it due to the cost. Consider a timing belt maintenance, which also involves replacing the water pump and tensioner. Depending on the vehicle, cost can range from $600-$1300 for parts and labor. Ouch! Getting out in nature, seeing the trees in blossom, the ducks and squirrels, and families on bikes and scooters just lifts my spirits out of the gloom that the gray winters can bring. The sunny Saturday has me looking forward to some of my favorite things about living here - food and music on the water! The Blues Festival and Brewers Fest specifically come to mind. It's always fun to try new things, or eat from some proven standbys, while listening to live music. Ahhhhh, sun, food, music. I can't wait.  Spring and summer are also the beginning of road trips! Whether you are planning a short trip to the coast, or a road trip to Southern California and Disneyland, now is the time to get your car ready before heading out on those adventures. A little planning ahead can save a lot of headache an ... read more
